The Advantages of Being a
Woman Artist
This poster is a visual representation of a manifesto written by the Guerrilla Girls in 1988. While it’s called “The Advantages of Being a Woman Artist,” it sarcastically describes all the disadvantages and struggles that women artists face in the workplace. I use type metaphorically here to cascade the Guerrilla Girls’ words down on a ribbon, a traditionally ‘feminine’ object, to cause a direct change to the title text. The traits of the title text to the left of the ribbon could be classified as ‘masculine’ (bold, heavy, sans-serif), and to the right it becomes ‘feminine’ (light, airy, elegant serif), representing how the Guerrilla Girls helped women take up more space in the art world.
